Barnett Institute Receives Award from Canary Foundation

In June 2007, the experimental bioinformatics group at the Barnett Institute received a "Bioinformatics Platform Dissemination" Award from the Canary Foundation, to adopt a Computational Proteomics Analysis System (CPAS).  The CPAS is a new computational platform for analysis of proteomics data with focus on biomarker discovery, especially early cancer detection.  This $10,000 award allowed researchers to upgrade hardware and configure the CPAS on the Barnett Institute computer cluster, train local users, and to customize CPAS for local analysis needs.

The Canary Foundation (www.canaryfoundation.org) is a non-profit corporation investing in technologies that will enable early detection of cancer. It was founded in 2004 by former Cisco executive vice-president Don Listwin. Its science team includes Nobel laureate Dr. Lee Hartwell and other leading researchers in the early detection field. It has partnerships with world-class cancer research centers including the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Stanford University Medical Center, BC Cancer Agency, and the University of California at San Francisco.
