Research Interests

Analytical and Protein Chemistry

Dr. Hancock's research program is developing new analytical platforms combined with new bioinformatics approaches, for applying proteomics to the study of plasma and serum in disease.  A focus of this program is clinical proteomics, the search for biomarkers that predict the progress of disease and can be used to segregate patients for individualized therapy.  Several key advances have been incorporated.   The research group has developed a new sample pre-fractionation approach, multi-lectin affinity chromatography (M-LAC), which has successfully been used to detect known (BRCA1) and new rare markers in sera of breast cancer patients.  In addition the M-LAC platform allows the deep study of changes in the glycoproteome in plasma and we have demonstrated that half of the proteins in blood are glycosylated. Another new platform developed in the laboratory allows the study of disease related proteolysis, named the "fragmentome", and monitors the degradation of disease associated markers.
