A center of excellence in the development and application of technologies for proteomics and systems biology, with missions to:

- Develop and apply new technologies for

basic and clinical biological research; and for the
    characterization of protein therapeutics;

- Train students and visiting scientists for academic, industrial, and medical leadership;

- Collaborate actively with the medical and industrial communities.

The Barnett Institute was established in 1973 as a center for advanced interdisciplinary research in the molecular sciences at Northeastern University in the educational hub of Boston, Massachusetts. Today with over 70 scientists and a $9 million endowment, the Institute is recognized internationally as one of the premier centers for cutting-edge research and advanced training in analytical chemistry for biomedical applications. The Barnett Institute's close ties to the Boston medical community and industry, along with its active program of licensing technology, provides for many "real life" applications of research advances which have led to more than 900 published papers and 70 patents.

Students and staff are encouraged to develop a broad base of knowledge and keep ahead of trends in the field. The bioanalytical research is at the interface of biology, medicine, informatics and chemistry. Students and staff are trained to think analytically and to understand the complexity of biological samples. The Institute's entrepreneurial approach and commitment to excellence has trained over 300 students to become leaders in industry and academia worldwide.
