The Barnett Institute announced recipients of its several
awards given annually at an October 21 Reception held at 450
Dodge.
The John N. Hatsopoulos Schoral Award was given to two Senior
Research Scientists, Marina Hincapie and Enrique Arevalo.
The Barnett Fund for Innovative Research Award was presented
to Shiaw-Lin (Billy) Wu.
Receiving the two 2005 Alumni Graduate Fellowship Awards
were Ph.D. students, Daren Levin and Tao Yu. This award was
established in 1998 from donations received from the Barnett
Institute 25th Anniversary Alumni Campaign. It
supports outstanding Ph.D. students in their final year of
research working with a faculty fellow of the Institute.
The Douglas and Irene DeVivo Awards were given to two Ph.D.
students, Terrence Black and Lingyun Li.. This award was established
in 1985 by alumnus Douglas DeVivo and his wife, Irene, to
recognize talented students.
The Gustel and Ernst Giessen Memorial Fund Awards in Advanced
Research were presented to two Ph.D. students, Dayana Argoti
and Tatjana Plavina and one Principal Research Scientist,
Eugene Moskovets. This award was established by Professor
Bill Giessen in memory of his parents to honor senior level
graduate students and Institute scientists for exceptional
research contributions.
The recipient of the Academic Excellence Award was Hong Gao.
This award is presented by the Barnett Institute to a first
year Ph.D. graduate student working for a faculty fellow of
the Institute and holding the highest QPA from the Department
of Chemistry and Chemical Biology.
In 2003, the Barnett Institute established an External Service
Award to recognize an individual from one of the many Northeastern
University departments working in their various roles to provide
services and support to Institute faculty, staff and researchers.
The 2005 recipient of this award was Richard McNeil, Jr.,
Director of Sponsored Project Administration. He was honored
for his work for the Institute and his help with sponsored
projects during many years.
